Jaguar XE Overview

The new Jaguar XE sports saloon has been officially launched in India at the 2016 Auto Expo. The most attainable offering from the car maker rivals the likes of Mercedes C-Class, BMW 3-Series as well as the Audi A4 in the segment offering the highly appreciated styling coupled with frugal yet powerful engines on board.

The new version of Jaguar’s most affordable offering, the XE saloon was launched in Indian market at the 13th edition of Auto Expo earlier in 2016. With significant changes made to the saloon both on cosmetic and mechanical front, the new XE surpasses its predecessor in terms of performance, looks and fuel efficiency. Apart from the all-new monocoque platform composed of lightweight aluminium, the saloon uses newly developed engine from Jaguar’s Ingenium family of engines, claimed to be fuel-efficient in nature. Jaguar XE Style

At the glimpse of the XE, the first impression we get is of the new XJ. The honeycomb mesh grille comes with the red growling cat and sharp headlamps. The fascia of the XE holds some similarity in design to the other Jags. The headlamp LED layout is new and this is carried forward on the upcoming Jags. Design by Ian Callum and his team, the XE has perfect sculpted proportions, with a long bonnet and the boot size is in proportion with the sloping roofline. The rear haunch is muscular indicating that the power is delivered through the rear wheels. The side profile is typical Jag, and the design DNA is carried forward. The rear styling is identical to other Jags and the tail lamp design has been inspired from the legendary E-Type. The XE comes with 17-inch tyres, our press demonstrator had Pirelli.

The XE has been built on the new iQ [Al] platform. This is an all aluminium platform and Al stands for Aluminium. This will be used to make the new XF, XJ and even the F-PACE. The new-gen vehicles are lighter due to the use of aluminium. This gives XE an advantage in its segment.

Jaguar XE Space

The interiors of the XE are all new. The baby Jag’s interiors have been cocooned around and the Jag logo sit at the centre. This is the British marquee’s new design theme for interiors that will be carried forward on to other sedans and crossovers too. The XE has black and camel brown interiors. There is the new Jaguar steering wheel that is similar to the F-TYPE. The instrument binnacle comes with twin dials and a driver information system too. There is a storage space for your smartphone on the right side of the steering wheel. Centre console consists of a touchscreen system with maps, reverse parking camera, side view cameras and telephone connectivity. There is also an dual zone climate control too. The gear knob is circular and it also rises into your palm when you switch on the car.

The Jaguar XE seats are extremely comfortable. The rear too has good comfort. The front row of seats are supportive and spacious. The rear isn’t as spacious as the front, but there is good enough head room and knee room. Two can sit comfortably at the rear and even the boot can gobble luggage for an entire weekend. There are rear AC vents, some storage space at the back along with a charging point for the rear passengers. The XE comes with a Meridian music system. JLR continues its relationship with Meridian even on the XE. The current Range Rover also gets a Meridian 3D surround sound system.

Jaguar XE Gearbox

The Jaguar XE diesel is powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine which is called Ingenium. This motor produces 180 PS at 4000 RPM and 430 Nm at 1750 – 2500 RPM, resulting in 0-100 km/hr coming up in 7.8 seconds while the top speed is 228 km/hr. It does pull well lower down and turbo lag is well contained with the mid-range being the strongest point of this powertrain as it’s between 2000 and 4000 RPM where this Jag pulls strong, there isn’t much of a top-end with redline coming up at 4900 RPM. It isn’t the most refined motor as it’s quite audible but in a good way as the sound from the twin exhausts is a bit sporty for a diesel.To know more info on Jaguar XE  check Cmap

There are 4 driving modes – Normal, Eco, Winter and Dynamics (with a chequered flag), these alter the engine, steering and AC, not the gearbox as the S mode on the rotary gear selector does that. In S mode, it holds the revs all the way, upshifting slightly below 4500 RPM while if you use the paddles, it will go into manual mode and not upshift till you do so. The gearbox is very quick with shifts, sometimes too fast as it downshifts when you don’t need it but I like the enthusiasm, especially in the city wherein stop-go traffic, this Jag feels just too punchy but you learn to modulate the throttle.

Technical aid equipped in the new XE for improved performance includes intelligent stop/start, cruise control with automatic speed limiter, torque vectoring by braking & all surface progress control, hill start assist, jaguar drive control, electronic power assisted steering, dynamic stability control & traction control. In terms of mileage, XE saloon is claimed to return 13.5 km/l.

Jaguar XE Driving

The ride of the XE is smooth. It has been tuned for better handling, but for India it has tweaked for better ride also. Drive on broken tarmac or even at high speeds. It irons out most of the road shocks for front and rear passengers making it extremely comfortable for the occupants. The handling of the XE is just fantastic. What makes it even better is the steering feedback. The steering wheel weighs up as speed increases. Most of the sedans in this segment now have electronic steering wheel that is extremely light and kills the joy for those who enjoy driving.

Jaguar XE Safety

While the after sales network isn’t as great as its German rivals, the Tata-owned brand is steadily expanding and is committed to giving peace of mind to its customers. In terms of safety features, the XE Diesel gets multiple airbags, Surround Camera System (offered in the top-end Portfolio trim only), Start/Stop System, Torque Vectoring, Dynamic Stability Control with Traction Control, ISOFIX child seat mounts, Hill Launch Assist and Jaguar Smart Key System (keyless entry, offered in the top-end Portfolio trim only).

Jaguar XE Final Thought

The XE retains the Jaguar DNA be it for looks and styling, interior, power and agility. The only knick in the armour is no option for diesel engines as majority of the luxury car sales in India are for oil burner. Leaving that, we loved the XE. With this brand, you don’t just move away from the German badge but you even procure a fresh product that looks a lot more expensive than its price tag.

The Jaguar XE with the addition of a diesel engine, becomes a more compelling package. The 240 BHP petrol version is, without doubt, one of the best cars in the segment but the diesel, although lacking the same levels of excitement, still manages to bring in the fun factor with its fantastic balance between ride and handling, not to forget more economical running costs. Factor in the current 3-Series is on its way out and you realise that the XE is currently the driver’s delight in the segment.
