Honda Jazz Overview
Honda first rolled out the Jazz hatchback in the year 2009 and then revived it in 2015 in a bid to give something new in the premium hatch segment. Since its revival in 2015, it didn’t get any updates until Honda recently decided to give it a minor facelift. The 2018 version of the Jazz has been given subtle changes with the outside getting same silhouette and same features as the older version. The new 2018 Honda Jazz on the inside gets some additional features over the pre-facelift model while it remains practical as before. The mechanical also remain identical. This time Honda has updated its variant list as well. The base trims E and the mid-spec SV trim has been omitted from the list. While, it’s new base S trim is only available with diesel engine. Honda Jazz Style
The Honda Jazz 2018 doesn’t get the changes that the European version got. The front grille is similar, no major change on the bumper, neither the headlamps. At the moment, the Jazz is offered with the same headlamps. No projectors and daytime running LEDs also. The design of the alloy wheels hasn’t changed either. It is the same styling and 15-inch wheels. The door handles now have chrome too. The rear of the hatchback now has some minor changes. The tail lamps are now LEDs and the rear looks more appealing then before. Apart from that, there is no other change in it. The Honda Jazz doesn’t see a major change as a facelift, more like a model year update from the outside.
Honda Jazz Space
Moving inside the car, here too there aren’t too many changes in it. The overall styling of the interiors hasn’t changed. The black dashboard continues on the Jazz. It has keyless entry, push start and stop which weren’t there before. The steering wheel also has good grip, and the VX variants gets leather wrap. The centre console when switched off, looks neat with a gloss black layout. The touchscreen system has good resolution, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now present on the Jazz. The reverse camera gets three modes: up-close, view and super view. These help to park easily. The glovebox is decent in size. The arm rest has storage underneath that has good space. The AC performance is the same, and it could be better. Especially for the rear passengers.
The front seats are extremely comfortable and are extremely comfortable. There is good side support and the seats are soft making it easy to sit on. The space at the rear is good and there is good comfort too for tall passengers as the floor raises makes it comfortable at the back. Though the rear seat back padding could have been better. There are no rear AC vents and no charging point for back passengers. Magic seats are gone and seats do not even have 60:40 split. The boot size is amazing and the loading lip is low for easy loading. The spare wheel is a size smaller and it is 14-inch one than the 15-inch.
Honda Jazz Gearbox
No mechanical changes have been made to the 2018 Honda Jazz. It is powered by the same set of engines and unfortunately the Japanese automaker isn’t offering a CVT gearbox with the diesel engine. The petrol engine is a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder, i-VTEC unit producing 89 HP at 6000 RPM and 110 Nm at 4800 RPM. This engine feels quite underpowered with below average low-end performance. In the mid-range, the engine starts opening up a bit but most of the action lies only near the redline. Out on the highways, a fair number of gearshifts are required if you want to gather pace quickly or while overtaking. The manual gearbox is slick and the clutch is light while the CVT, though noisy, is super convenient and a good choice for people who want an AT. The Jazz petrol isn’t exactly fuel efficient and you can expect 9-12 km/l from the petrol variants.
The diesel engine is a 1.5-litre i-DTEC unit that makes 99 HP at 3600 RPM and 200 Nm at 1750 RPM. This comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox. There are no noticeable changes to the NVH levels and the engine continues to feel noisy. Drivability with the oil-burner is very good and turbo lag is manageable and the Jazz delivers power linearly in the mid-range but starts tapering off before 4000 RPM. It doesn’t run out of steam on the highways too and the 6th gear is also a huge boon while you’re cruising. With the diesel variant, expect fuel efficiency to hover between 17-21 km/l.
Honda Jazz follows the traits of City and comes with both the diesel and petrol engine options. The diesel powered Jazz is good for producing ARAI certified 27.3kms for a litre fuel, making it the most fuel efficient premium diesel hatchback, falling just behind the Maruti Baleno. However, the real world figures might be around 20kmpl in mix conditions.On the other hand, the petrol powered Jazz can deliver 18.2kmpl while the CVT automatic petrol can return the mileage figures of 19kmpl. Again, the real world figures would be different, you can expect mileage close to 15kmpl.

The new generation Jazz sits on a highly improved suspension setup. The car offers excellent ride quality especially at slow and medium speeds while crashing into the potholes is no more a concern. The Japanese automaker looking at the Indian driving conditions has cleverly managed to straighten out the stiffness in the ride quality.The powered steering is light, fuss-free and direct that makes the car perfect for city driving. The car is able to tackle corner with ease and remain composed till the grip limits of the tyres.

The safety package too has got an upgrade on the new Honda Jazz. Dual airbags, rear parking sensors, rear windshield defogger, speed sensing door unlock and ABS with EBD come as standard across all the variants. The top variant in addition gets a reverse camera with guidelines. Honda has really upped the safety game on the Jazz which is a good thing. In terms of after sales, Honda’s badge is known for its reliability and the Jazz is a pocket friendly hatch to run when it comes to service costs.

The Honda Jazz is a very good premium hatchback but we feel it could have done with some more updates because the design has started to feel a bit dated now. Competition in this segment is very tough and that’s a cause of concern for the Jazz. However, in things like space and practicality it is hard to beat this vehicle. The Honda Jazz diesel makes a very good choice for people who want power and efficiency at the same time without compromising on cabin space.
